Highwaymen Paintings

Bobby Owens

In 1970,  Bobby Owens started selling the famous Highwaymen paintings from the back of his car. The Fort Pierce native knew many of the original artists who captured Florida’s  magnificent landscape on boards and canvas as they traveled the state’s coast.  Nearly 40 years later,  Bobby calls himself a collector and  is still at it.  He’s sold for many different artists, but these days most of the works he sells and displays at the Stuart Green Market are works by Willie Daniels.

Original painters of light

Highwaymen paintings are distinctively unique. They are generally landscape settings either overlooking a beach, marsh or of a sprawling tree such as a Royal Poinciana.  The sky, water and land dominate the scene with vivid colors and a special color technique that  makes the painting glow with sunlight.  As you view the painting, you can “feel” the sun’s rays on your shoulders. The colors, often reds, orange and yellows would seem odd for painting a landscape of trees, but somehow it works. Anyway, it is easier to experience than to describe.

Art that comes with history

Highwaymen paintings are not only beautiful, they tell a story about Florida’s past.  And Bobby will share a few of those tales with those who stop by his booth to browse and view his latest exhibit.

Bobby Owens and his collection of Highwaymen paintings can also be  found at the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Arts and Crafts Market,  Saturdays.
